Avani Avittam 2022
Significance :
Avani Avittam is celebrated when Dhanishta (avittam) nakshatra falls on the Sravana month (August - September) of the Hindu calendar when Brahmins ritually change their Upanayana thread every year.It is an important hindu festival as it is also called as Sravana Poornima.
The star Avittam rises on the day every year.Recitation of the Vedas on this great day is highly beneficial.
On this day,a Mahasankalpam or a vow is taken for the penitence of all sins in the past year. Chanting mantra on this day will protect the beneficier from evil influences."Gayatri Mantra" should be chanted 1008 times on the next day after the avani avittam function.
RAKSHA BANDHAN is celebrated in North India on the same day.
Procedure for Avani Avittam:
I The ritual is started with the Rishi Tharpanam (offering prayers to the ancient Rishis).
II Brahmin bachelors perform 'Samitha Daanam' and 'kamo karshith japam' after Mahasankalpam.
III Next, Kaanda Rishi tharpanam is performed with the help of priest.
IV Next day after an early bath, 'Gayathri Japam' should be chanted for 1008 times.
V Homam is performed either in the house or in temple.
VI Green Gram, Dhal or Kondai Kadalai Sundal are offered as Neivedhyam for the Homam (Fire ritual).
VII Payasam, Vada, rice, curd pachadi, kosumalli curry, koottu, buttermilk, rasam, dhal, chips and appalams are prepared and served for everyone.
