Maha Shivaratri 2014
Maha Shivaratri falls on 27th of February 2014. Maha Shivratri, means the great night of Lord Shiva. On this auspicious day devotees observe fast and worship Lord Shiva. Maha Shivratri is one of the best days for spiritual meditation and chanting of Panchakshara Mantra 'Om Namah Shivaya' or Mahamritunjaya Mantra using a Rudraksha Japa Mala. The celebration of Maha Shivratri starts on the night of 13th and 14th day in the Krishna Paksha of the Maagha month.
The entire night of Maha Shivratri is divided into four quarters and special prayers are offered during each quarter. At the end of each quarter Abhishekam is done with Milk, Coconut water, Curd, Honey, Sandalwood Paste and Rose Water. Offering of Bael (Bilva) leaves along with fruits to Lord Shiva is must on the Maha Shivaratri.
During the churning of the ocean by the Gods and demons, a poison came out of the ocean. It was so toxic, that its effect would have wiped out the entire creation. The gods approached Shiva and prayed to him to protect their lives by consuming the poison. Pleased with their prayers, out of compassion for
living beings, Lord Shiva drank the poison and held it in his throat by binding it with a snake. The throat became blue due to the poison (Thus Lord Shiva is also known as Neelakanta) and Shiva remained unharmed.
Maha Shivratri is therefore a day of thanksgiving to the Lord for protecting us from annihilation. All devotees of Lord Shiva perform "Shivlingam abhishekham" at midnight on Maha Shivaratri day.
