Ganesha is widely revered as the Remover of Obstacles and more generally as Lord of Beginnings and Lord of Obstacles. Ganesha’s head symbolizes the Atma (soul), the ultimate, or the supreme, reality of human existence. His human body signifies maya, or illusion, the earthly existence of human beings. The elephant head signifies wisdom, and the trunk epitomizes Om – the sound emblem of cosmic reality. The broken tusk is a symbol of sacrifice.

Those who worship Lord Ganesha on new year day and perform homa/puja on the day will be removed of all obstacles in life. Saturn is in retrograde position from 20th December 2007.It will be in retrograde position till May 3rd 2008.During this period, those who have got weak Saturn will find tough time.Worshiping Lord Balaji and Hanuman will ease the problems.
