Significance :

 Avani Avittam an important hindu festival falls on the full moon day of the month of Sravan (mid August-September).The Star Avittam also rises on the same day every year.Recitation of the Vedas on this great day is highly beneficial.

On this day,a Mahasankalpam or a vow is taken for the penitence of all sins in the past year. Chanting mantra on this day will protect the beneficier from evil influences."Gayatri Mantra" should be chanted 1008 times on the next day after the avani avittam function.

RAKSHA BANDHAN is celebrated in North India on the same day.
